New Radicals - ”You Get What You Give

What Bill captured in his earlier post was a song that is quintessentially 90s. I think sometimes when I get nostalgic for the 90s, I listen to bands that are still producing music. Which is great—there’s no reason we can’t compare old school Weezer to new school Weezer. Or Radiohead’s first albums to In Rainbows.

Some bands, however, didn’t ever make it out of the 90s. No, no, I’m not talking about Nirvana or Notorious B.I.G, who are icons of that era. I’m talking Vertical Horizon and Nine Days, people. Bands that seemed so great for the 15 minutes while their big songs hit number one, but in retrospect…what were we thinking?

New Radicals was only together for 2 years, during which a myriad of band members cycled through, only anchored by their lead singer, Gregg Alexander. You Get What You Give was released in 1998 and is so 90s it hurts: its upbeat rhythm, its critique of selling out (which went over my head at the time), lyrics that are trying to be inspirational, and the music video is of some punk kids in a mall. I can remember loving this song.

For what it is, a youth anthem of the late 90s, You Get What You Give is a great song but that’s kind of all it is.

Still love this stupid song.

ditto, soupsoup :]
